How to professionally grade coins?
Hi,
I was wandering if anyone has any advice about grading coins. I use the British Grading System if that makes a difference.
I know the basics about grading (Fine Very Fine etc.) but was wandering if anyone has anymore advice when grading a coin.
Thanks for reading.
The grading systems used in the U.S and the UK are different. Your best bet is ti get a grading book or talk to a few coin dealers. Here in the states most collectors put to much stress on grade and not enough on eye appeal or historic value. I could care less about the grade as long as I like it and of course the price was fair. There are a lot of grading books available here to help us, they come out with new ones all the time. The newer ones with color photos of the different grades for each series is a great help. Not all U.S. or UK coins wear the same or are struck the same. But I can do here.

Grade of the coin is what tells us about the quality of a coin. That is, how worn out a coin is or how good a condition is the coin in. Grading has nothing to do with the rarity or antiquity of a coin. Grading is essentially an art, which means that there is no standard or precise demarcation between the different grades, just a general guideline. Grading is done on an intuitive, judgmental basis, and grading done by two individuals may well differ. There is not even a standard accepted set of grades, but again some loosely defined grades with loose ends open for interpretation. I am putting up a list of grades, starting from the poorest, which in my opinion are the basic grades and are used in the terminology 90% of the time:
1)B ASAL STATE: This type of coin is completely worn out and is barely recognizable to be a coin. No date, no features,no nothing can be seen. This is also rarely found and its value is the lowest.
2) POOR(PO): A little of the features are visible but again, very poor quality.
3) FAIR: With fair coins, you can see enough of the design and inscriptions to determine the coin's type - The coin above is an Edward VII florin. Depending upon the type of wear, the date may or may not be visible. The term "Fair" is sometimes also used to describe coins which are less worn than the coin above, but exhibit serious faults. Other examples of damaged coins include those that are bent, severely discoloured, rusty etc.
4) ABOUT GOOD/ALMOST GOOD(AG): Outlined design. Parts of date and legend worn smooth. This is a used up coin. You should be able to make out the date (possibly with some effort). Often, only parts of the last two digits will be visible.
5) GOOD(G): Outlined design. Parts of date and legend worn smooth. A good coin is heavily worn and shows little or no detail, but its design and legend are visible though faint in spots, and its date is legible.
6) VERY GOOD(VG): The design and legends of VG coins display little or none of the fuzziness of Good coins, yet the coins still fail to exhibit much detail.
7) FINE(F): Fine coins show some detail, and the main elements of their design appear clear and bold. Moderate to heavy even wear.
VERY FINE(VF): On Very Fine coins, all major features are sharp, but evidence of wear is apparent on the higher surfaces of the coin, and some fine detail will be worn or absent.
EXTREMELY FINE(EF/XF): Very light wear on only the highest points.Extremely Fine coins show evidence of handling on only their highest points. If you examine the above coin closely, you will find that some strands of hair appear flat in areas. EF coins that have suffered from little exposure to the elements and managed to retain most of their original mint lustre are often referred to as "Lustrous EF".
9) UNCIRCULATED(UNC): Uncirculated coins exhibit no wear at all, though small marks may be apparent as a result of contact with other coins at the mint and during transportation/packaging. These small marks are referred to as "bag marks" (BM). Coins which retain 100% of their original detail but show evidence of handling or minimal wear can be referred to as "AU" (about/almost uncirculated).
10) BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED(BU): Uncirculated coins with full original mint lustre are referred to as "Brilliant Uncirculated". The golden £ 5, minted in 1988. A brilliant uncirculated coin should not show smudge marks even under a 30-point microscope, and is having proof-like characteristics. This one had a price tag of £525, and the bullion version released had a price of £325. So the buyers may have felt cheated as they bought this for more than double its cost in gold. The same coin released in 2008 has a price of euro 1390.
11) PROOF: This is the coin of the highest quality. It is minted under stringent quality norms and strict supervision. The metal for the coin is first carefully selected in which the selection % is barely 20%. Then it is struck at least twice with polished dies to produce an absolute mirror-like surface. You can easily see the reflection of the foreground in this 100 rupee coin.50% of this coin is silver. These Proof Coins also have an easily identifiable mint mark. This one had 'M' symbol on its reverse. Proof here is used as it is in waterproof and bulletproof, because this coin is proof of dust, smudge or bag marks and even the slightest wear and tear. Even its handling is done much more carefully as compared to an uncirculated coin and there is no chance of this coin getting wear and tear before reaching its intended recipient.
You can get to know about grading in a better way at my blog when you see the pictures of the different graded coins, and you can also see my collection here: http://kulraj-the-numismatist.blogspot.com/

New Approval of the .9999 Fine Gold Coin
New .9999 fine (24 karat) 1-oz legal tender $50 gold coins will be added to the U.S. Mint's line of gold bullion coins in 2006 when President Bush signs into law a bill that Congress passed in December. The legislation calls for the Mint to have the coins ready to distribute by June 2006, but the coins may be ready before then.
The legislation authorizing the new .9999 fine gold coins was quite specific, mandating the design and even the method of packaging. For the first year of issuance, the coins "shall bear the original designs by James Earle Fraser, 'which appear on the 5-cent coin commonly referred to as the 'Buffalo nickel' or the '1913 Type 1'." This wording, without specifically saying it, calls for the obverse (front) of the coins to carry the famed Indian Head design by Fraser. The reverse will carry the equally-famed buffalo design.
Each Indian Head-Buffalo coin is to be encased in a protective capsule, possibly such as the capsules used by Australia's Perth Mint to protect its .9999 fine gold bullion coins, including the popular limited edition Lunar Series Gold Bullion Coins. The protective cases "shall be readily distinguishable" from the packaging for Proof Coins, which are also authorized by the bill.
For years, proof coins have been individually encapsulated in protective cases. Individually encapsulating bullion coins will be new to the U.S. Mint. The Mint's 22-karat (.9167 fine) American Gold Eagles, which are the world's best-selling gold bullion coins, are packaged twenty to a tube and are not individually encapsulated.
Production of the Indian Head-Buffalo coins will be unlimited, and they will be marketed toward gold investors who prefer .9999 fine (24-karat) gold coins. The U.S. Mint already has the world's best-selling gold bullion coins with its 22-karat (.9176 fine) Gold Eagles. Still, there is a huge market for pure gold coins, and the new Indian Head-Buffalo coins will give the U.S. Mint a product for that market. The Asian and Indian markets clearly prefer pure gold coins, while alloyed gold coins are more popular in the Western World.
Presently, the Royal Canadian Mint's .9999 fine Gold Maple Leafs are the world's best selling pure gold coins. However, the Gold Maple Leafs have fallen into disfavor with investors because of the ease with which they are damaged. To counter this, the Royal Canadian Mint recently introduced new packaging for the 1-oz Gold Maple Leafs.
The new packaging for the 1-oz Gold Maple Leafs will put the coins individually in capsules that are suspended in credit card sizes cards, twenty-five coins to a box. It is too early to gauge market acceptance of the new packaging for the Gold Maple Leafs.
Considering the popularity of the of Indian Head-Buffalo design, the U.S. Mint's new .9999 fine gold coins could provide stiff competition for the Gold Maple Leafs. Fraser's designs proved to be a winner in 2001 when the U.S. Mint produced a limited number of Indian Head-Buffalo $1 silver coins sets. The sets sold out immediately and today carry prices several times their initial offering prices.
The new Indian Head-Buffalo .9999 fine gold coins, however, will not be limited edition, at least not the first year. The bill permits the Mint to "change the maximum number of coins issued" in subsequent years. Further, the bill authorizes the Mint to change the designs on either the obverse or the reverse after the first year's production.
Although the U.S. Mint produces its popular American Gold Eagles in four sizes, 1-oz, 1/2-oz, 1/4-oz, and 1/10-oz, the new Indian Head-Buffalo pure gold coins will be minted in only one size: 1-ounce. With the popular Indian Head and Buffalo designs, the Mint's new .9999 fine gold coins could quickly become favorites with gold coin investors.

Coin Key Date
Coin Key Date

Buying or selling gold coins is directly or indirectly a process for financial investment as well as aesthetic pleasure. Some coins attain hefty premium due to their rarity and quality. The worthiness of gold coin can be measured by the wear and tear and handling of the coin that is present on the coin. Rarity of the coin plays the most important role in increasing the valuation.
Original gold coins were minted as legal tenders by the country governments throughout the world. Before 1930's when the governments were off the gold standards including United States, the production of gold coin was started. Though the gold coins are stated with the value on them, they cost more than the stated value as it contains real gold in it. Gold coins also convey history and arts; all the coins have its own historical values.
$20.00 Gold coin is of size about half dollar coin and weighs one ounce which is standard. It weighs more than the real $20 coin. There are some lesser denominations minted such as $1, $3, $5 and $10. Some foreign coins are also available that are very popular such as British Sovereign that weighs about quarter ounce gold and Franc that is one fifth ounce of gold.
Gold Sovereigns are the most popular amongst the series of gold coins in the world. It weighs about.2354 ounces of gold and size is about same as U.S. nickel. It is being minted since 1489 by the British and it was issued with the portrait of Henry VII. These coins were replaced by Unites and Guineas from 1604 to 1816 but came into existence again in 1817. This time it was issued with the portrait of George III. When United States won its independence George III was the King of England. The era from George III until the present age is considered as Modern Sovereign.
Gold Sovereigns always features the portrait of the ruling king or queen. The coins can be collected with a basic way by considering the monarch. The portraits of George III, George IV, George V, George VI, William IV, Victoria, Edward VII, and Elizabeth are commonly seen on the coins of modern sovereigns. No sovereigns were made with the portraits of Edward VIII as he was ruling King for less than a year.
A special sovereign was designed and made in 1989 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of gold coins. It has the impression of Queen Elizabeth II sitting on her throne. Many gold sovereigns have the reverse design of St George slaying the dragon. Collecting gold sovereigns with the reverse designs can be done easily as these coins do not cost much. There is a mark that indicates the country of manufacture of the sovereign. This mark is a small letter that is embossed beneath the portrait or on the reverse side of the coin such as 'S' stands for Sydney, 'M' for Melbourne, 'C' for Canada, 'I' for India, 'SA' for South Africa. If a coin is without any mint mark then it states that it is manufactured in London. Since 1932 all the sovereigns are manufactured in London.
Collecting these gold sovereigns by the dates is a very ambitious way to make a collection. There are only multiple gaps during reigns of George V, George VI and Elizabeth II. The coins that are much older are more expensive. Buying the sovereigns every year can be very expensive. Some coins are so rare that they may prove impossible to be bought at any cost. Buying and selling of these coins can be done through internet, make sure you consult some coin books or internet to determine the actual pricing of them. Knowledge of current price can prove helpful to know the rise and fall in the rates. Make sure you are dealing with the right person and reputed seller and ensure all the handling and shipments.

i know that the 1877 and 1909-s are key dates for these coins, but why are the 1866-67-68 coins are what seems to me to be high priced consider how many was made?
It's called supply and demand. What matters is not how many were made, but how many are out there now.
If a lot of pennies weren't made in the 1870s, then pennies from the 1860s would circulate more and receive more wear and thus lose collector value.
Periodic spikes in the demand for copper might make it profitable to melt pennies. These include wars, but are not limited to wars. (There are always wars going on somewhere in the world.)

Rare Silver Coin

Buy Canadian Coin Collecting Hobby: Canada Silver Coins, Gold, Nickel, Dime
Let's take a look at what I think are the gems of Canadian coin collecting. These gems are the gold and silver coins to begin with. The value of a gold or silver coin is not just evaluated on the rarity of the coin only, but is also evaluated on the metal which the coin is made of.
The worth of the gold or silver, which is in the coins, can be much greater than the coins' dollar face-value by many times over. Take a small worn-out silver dime for instance, which some call a junk silver dime because the grade of the coin is so poor that it is not worth selling for the quality or beauty of the coin's face and tail side. This small coin falls into a category all of its own, and is bought for the silver content most often.
Nowadays, you can buy a silver junk dime to begin your Canadian coin collection. This will only cost about one dollar on the open market. If the coin is just rare because of low mintage or a high grade; what holds up the price if the demand for that Canadian coin drops? The silver and gold coins will hold up because they are gold and silver. What if the price of metal drops, as well? You are smart and are the best one to answer that question, but I will add that silver and gold have never being at a zero dollar-value over the last thousand years. That means that there has been at least some demand for gold and silver for a very long time.
Collecting coins for the fun of having a piece of history, or something that is rare in your hand is the backbone of collecting coins in the first place. This hobby can be for the rich and the poor. Even some Canadian pennies that are just made out of copper can be worth thousands of dollars.
For the most part, collectible types of coins that are very expensive are for the very rich who don't know what to do with the cash that is oozing out of their wallets. This is what brings coin collecting to life; when the rich invest in your hobby. Who knows, maybe you have a coin that many rich people want? Now that would be a thrill! Should you sell the coin, bragging about how you came across it and the whole works, or should you just tuck it away for safe-keeping? If you are going to share, you may want to keep it to people you can trust and not in the greedy ears of individuals who may want to keep your coin for themselves.
The thing that I like most about collecting Canadian coins is that you can have something that is valuable, fun, unique, and a piece of history; whether that be as expensive as a gold coin, or as cheap as a 1944 V nickel, or as simple as a 1967 centennial bird Copper Penny. And yet they can all fit easily into your pocket or into your secret hiding place that is meant for your little treasures.

high-end rare coins, recession, value preservation?
of course having gold or silver coins provides an advantage over the face value of the coins based on the cost of bullion. and of course better condition will command a slightly better price. i'm wondering if high-end numismatics are going to plummet too or if they would retain their premium. i imagine that if there are less people willing or able to purchase coins their prices must go down, yet i'm also wondering if, other than accummulating lots of metal, if truly collectible coins are better than, say, stocks, bonds, mutual funds, etc. i guess i'm not so much looking for an answer as much as discussion.
I can tell you that, over the past year, I have noticed that high-end, premium Morgan Dollars are not fetching the same price that they did on eBay. It that a fool-proof indicator? No, but it is a clear sign that the opposite is not happening; people are not flocking in to buy them which would drive the prices up. Obviously, they are out-performing the sub-7000 DOW, but at this point, I would say these investment grade coins are not immune to falling prices due to a flailing economy.
