Harvesting The Gold At Our Feet
About a week ago, I had the opportunity to revisit my old friend Dave over the phone. He was an old train-watcher, just like me. He was also an old senior citizen, just like me. I asked him if he'd photographed any good trains lately. He replied, "A few, now and then."
A long time back in the Washington DC - Maryland area, there used to be some gold mining in Carderock Springs. About five years ago, Dave took to panning for gold in and around Carderock. I thought this was the dumbest thing he ever did.
When we last spoke, Dave told me he and his family had visited Austria and the Czech Republic. I knew (or so I thought) that Dave was living on crumbs, just like the lifestyle of my invalid wife and me. I was shocked to learn what he was really up to.
Dave had managed to accumulate enough earnings from gold panning at Carderock Springs to enable him to check out other parts of the country for gold panning. This allowed him to invest small amounts in gold futures. In time, Dave had established a nice income.
The lesson learned is this: Just like gold bits in a flowing stream, money on the internet literally grows at our feet. You have to learn where to harvest it. You also have to know how to harvest it. Despite all of the hype ads you see, money does not materialize out of thin air. Somebody has to make it happen. You are that somebody.
Here are a few "dos" and "don'ts."
1. Always avoid spamming or putting your arms around deals you sense are scams. If there is anything that can torpedo your gold mine harvest, this can do it. As soon you have established correspondence with some reputable folk, you can judge who is playing the spam / scam game.
2. Recognize that there are thousands if not millions of users like you and me that are out there that desperately need financial help. Right now, I live off Social Security. I have a wife that is an invalid. I am still trying to get about without a car. I have two adult offspring that each day repeat the immortal words of Clark Gable in "Gone With The Wind." ("Frankly ....I don't give a damn!")
3. Form networks of users like you and me that are in the same boat as in Item 2. Together, we can help each other. Going it alone or going it aided by spam or scam merchants ...we can't do anything.
4. Join network "friends" groups, but proceed with caution. The spammers and scammers are in control over there. We still might be able to harvest a network of friends there but I haven't found the key that unlocks the door.
5. Start learning how to write and submit articles. Article submission is one of the hot buttons these days.
6. Be prepared for a lot of hard work which might be unrewarding at the start. Also be prepared to receive tons of junk mail in your in box.
7. Remember the words of Mr. Saburo Sakai, the Japanese naval air ace in World War II. He died in 2000 after surviving WW II and living to a ripe old age. In his twilight years, Mr. Sakai was a noted systems consultant for a software company in developing an aerial combat game. He lived by these words: "Never, ever give up!" I think the famed football coach Vince Lombardi said the very same thing.
May good fortune be with you on your harvest for gold.

I need an antique vase appraisal and possible history?
I have a Kaufmann vase,13 3/4 inches tall, 6 inches wide at the center.. yellow background with Victoria Austria painted scene of a man and woman, 2 handles trimmed in gold, flowers on center back, gold trim around the top and bottom of vase. It has the number 256 stamped on the bottom in gold. It has Austria stamped in blue and a lined figure with a D in one corner of it. It also has what looks like a 12 imprinted into the base before finishing. I am curious about the history and value of the vase. It was given to my grandmother in 1930.My grandmother was told it was over 100 years old then. If anyone can give me any info on this vase please email me . Thank you

Hello From Austria - Hiking Through The Vineyards Of Southwestern Styria
On a beautiful warm summer day and after a nice filling breakfast we got going early yesterday to embark on our Sunday excursion to the south-western part of Styria. I wasn't particularly well-rested after a full day yesterday that included a hike, a local driving tour and a birthday party, but I was keen to explore the area west of Leibnitz, Styria's foremost winegrowing region together with my brother Ewald, his wife Anneliese and our friends Luis and Isabella.
Distances in Europe are always on a different scale than in North America. Southwestern Styria is only about one hour from my home town of Weiz and nevertheless it is considered a different geographic region from my home area of East Styria. Southwestern Styria enjoys a favourable climate with Mediterranean influences and the temperatures are on average higher than those in the surrounding regions. The area is particularly well-known for its rolling hills, many of which are used as vineyards for growing mostly white, but also some red wines of the Zweigelt or Blauburgunder variety. The most well-known wine of this area is called "Schilcher", a rose-coloured wine, whose special designation can only be applied to wines that were grown in this particular area and made from a type of grape called the "Blaue Wildbacher".
We stopped our vehicle on a parking lot just steps away from the "Weinbauschule Silberberg" (the Silberberg School of Viticulture). This particular schools features a 1.5 km long wine educational trail that provides informational background about the history of wine, about details related to wine-growing as well as a collection of old wine farming implements and tools. A 5 m high statue of St. Urban, the patron saint of the vintners, stands at the beginning of the wine educational trail, and further up the hill there is an oversized metal sculpture of an insect called the wine pest that was brought in from France in the 1800s and almost completely deciminated Styrian wine cultivation.
We slowly hiked up on pathways along the vineyards and had a beautiful view south, and westwards towards the mountain chain separating the Austrian provinces of Styria and Carinthia. Schloss Seggau (Seggau Castle), dating back to the 12th century, was clearly visible nearby, a structure that was once used to defend Austria's border against invading Turks and Hungarians, but today has found new use as a hotel and conference centre.
Once we reached the top of the hill we climbed up the "Kreuzkogelwarte", a lookout tower at an elevation of 496 m that provided a continuous 360 degree view of the surrounding countryside. North of us was the provincial capital of Graz with a backdrop of the mountains of Northern Styria, south of us Slovenia, and west of us the Austrian province of Carinthia.
My brother pointed out a particular hill that also featured a vineyard and was apparently the property of famous Austrian tennis player Thomas Muster, who hails from the nearby district capital of Leibnitz. Thomas Muster, a former number 1 player, was one of the most gifted clay court players in the history of tennis and achieved 44 ATP tour titles throughout his career during the 1990s. Today Thomas Muster heads up his own fashion label called TOMS, runs a vineyard, has gotten involved in the production of high-quality Alpine spring water called TOMS Water, and not surprisingly, developed a tennis racquet called TOMS Machine in collaboration with the Kneissl company, released in 2005. A great tennis career can open many doors...
We continued our hike of the surrounding hills and walked by a so-called "Buschenschank", a rustic local restaurant owned by a vintner who is able to sell his own wine as well as a variety of self-produced culinary products. This is a typical Austrian gastronomic establishment that was originally limited to selling only this-year's wine and had strict limitations as to what type of foods they could serve. Today, many vintner's obtain a full restaurant license in order to sell regular hot foods as well.
After an enjoyable hike along the ridge of a vineyards we started our descent into the valley and spent about 45 minutes walking down a forest road and then headed into a cool forest that took us back to our vehicle. A fifteen minute drive later we arrived at our lunch destination: "Buschenschank Koschak" is a popular local destination for good wines and excellent local Styrian food. We had reserved a table and sat outside under trellises covered with grapes and vine tendrils.
It was seriously time for a traditional Styrian meal: I started with a "Fritattensuppe" (a clear beef broth that features thinly cut pancake strips), my favourite Austrian soup. Then all five of us shared a big platter of Austrian Fried Chicken as well as a Rosemary Chicken with Rice. Austrian fried chicken is very crispy and less greasy than North American varieties and is a staple of traditional Austrian Sunday lunches. Traditionally, the largest meal is eaten at lunch time in Austria, although modern work routines have changes the traditional rhythms of food preparation and consumption as well.
The obligatory side dish is a mixed salad containing lettuce, tomatoes, beans and other varieties of vegetables, marinated with vinegar and pumpkin seed oil. Pumpkin seed oil is a popular Styrian speciality, a specialty oil made from the roasted seeds of pumpkins. Styrian pumpkins are unique: the seeds have lost their wooden shell due to a mutation about 100 years ago and only a tiny silver-coloured membrane protects the seed. This soft consistency of the seeds facilitates efficient pressing of the oil. The final product is a thick, dark green oil that has a nutty flavour and is used primarily as a salad oil, but also to refine soups and other dishes. You can even get a "pumpkin seed parfait" as a dessert, which is exactly what my brother ordered after we were finished.
Incidentally, pumpkin seed oil is the only Styrian delicacy that I buy in Austria to bring back to Toronto, or I might request someone traveling from Austria to bring me a bottle. As a passionate salad eater, Austrian pumpkin seed oil is my favourite salad dressing, bar none. And just recently I found a German delicatessen store that apparently carries Styrian pumpkin seed oil right here in Toronto. So thanks to Toronto's multicultural culinary landscape I might actually be able to get my favourite Austrian delicacy right here without having to beg an Austrian visitor to bring me a bottle.
After a great meal I got really tired, especially considering the fact that I only had a few hours of sleep last night. I slept all the way home in the car and once we got back to my brother's house, I crashed for a few hours. I woke up at about 7 pm, and just before having a light dinner, I hopped on Anneliese's bicycle and went cycling for an hour throughout my home town.
Sunday night Austrian towns are traditionally very quiet since everyone is getting ready to go to work the next day, so the roads were nice and peaceful. When I came back my brother and sister-in-law were ready to go to bed so I turned in early to rest up for today. Well, unfortunately the weather today did not cooperate as planned and the entire morning was grey and drizzly. At noon time I visited my friends Andrea and Herbert, whose daughter Nina had stayed with my husband and me last year to as part of her Canadian stint to work as a nanny.
Andrea is the older sister of one of my best friends from school, and I had not seen her for at least 23 years. It was great to see her again, we had already chatted numerous times for free using www.skype.com, and I knew she had the same love for languages, travel and cosmopolitan thinking as me. She graciously invited me to join her family for lunch and I was listening intently to Andrea's and Herbert's travel stories from Rumania. Just in the last few weeks they had spent some time in Bucharest and in Transsylvania and learned much about Rumania's interesting history as well as about the tyrannical Ceauscescu regime. We all agreed that we view traveling much differently as we get older, that today we really see travel as an opportunity to learn and to understand the world and its historic and environmental contexts.
We decided that we would jointly visit another local tourism attraction tomorrow: the "Katerloch", a famous local limestone cave that is a popular regional tourist destination.
After a little walk in town I met my friends Luis and Isabella and their friend Wolfgang to play a couple of hours of tennis in an indoor tennis facility. The tennis club also features a bistro where we enjoyed a couple of pizzas afterwards and a beer. I thought to myself "these Austrians know how to live". None of the Canadian tennis clubs that I have been at feature a bistro or any kind of gastronomic establishment. So I realized these Austrians have their priorities straight: you can work out and burn calories, but you have to cap it off with a nice tasty meal and a local beer because "Gemütlichkeit" (loosely translated as warm cordiality in a cozy environment) is an important factor here.
After about an hour I thanked my friends for a great tennis match and a cozy evening and headed back to my brother's house to reconnect with him and to rest up for another eventful day tomorrow.

The Dow, Dollar & Gold – What Goes Down Must Come Up
This year has been a very exiting time for traders and investors. We have seen a steady climb in prices with controlled pullbacks in the broad market and gold.
Using technical analysis we are able to quickly and accurately make informed decisions just from looking at the charts. In the charts below you will see how simple chart patterns along with support & resistance levels can provide excellent low risk entry points. Also you will see how candle stick charts can be an early indicator for prices to reverse direction.
DIA ETF – Daily
The DIA (Dow Jones Index Fund) is trending higher. By applying some basic technical analysis you are able to time your entry points having the odds in your favor.
In this chart I use two simple forms of analysis. The broadening formation (red trend lines), and horizontal support zones shown in blue.
Broadening Formations: This is when the price becomes more volatile making higher highs and lower lows. I think of it as one of those Megaphones for talking to large groups of people. So when a chart has this pattern it’s virtually yelling at me and I start taking profits or tightening my stops.
Horizontal Support Zones: I like to focus on support or resistance zones which are a little different than most traders. I do not use the top and bottoms of previous waves for these levels. Instead I take the average price then expect the support level to be penetrated somewhat as the level is tested. This is how the market keeps you out of the good trades. I cover this in great detail in my Stock Market Trading Education Course available in January.
Analysis: The DIA ETF looks ready for a pullback to the $99- 100 level.
GLD Exchange Traded Fund – Weekly
Gold has been on fire and riding this wave up has been very profitable thus far. Last week a doji candle was formed on the chart and this can signal a change in short term price action.
This chart shows some of the past doji candles and what happened to the price of gold soon after. What this candle is telling us is that the buying and selling pressure is equal. So we know momentum is slowing and we should expect a consolidation or correction.
Because gold has rocketed higher, indeed going almost straight up in the recent weeks, I expect a pullback to be very quick. A drop to the $110 or even the $100 level in the coming weeks is not out of the question, but we all know commodities can go parabolic for several months (straight up). This is why we continue to tighten our stops and keep holding out long positions.
US Dollar – Weekly
The US dollar has been up and down like a yo-yo in the past 15 months. The chart below clearly shows what has been happening with this currency and what I think we could see very soon.
The blue support zone (73-74) is a key pivot point for the dollar. That being said lets take a look at the chart.
During the time when the price is trending higher July 2008 – Feb 2009 we see lower wicks appear more often. This tells me that sellers pushed the price down early in the week but were then overcome by buyers nearer the end of the week. This is bullish price action. Also the broadening patterns during this timeframe’s tops indicate increased volatility and we know that is a sign of weakness.
From March 2009 – Sept 2009 the trend was down and there are longer upper wicks telling us buyers became over powered by sellers each time the price rallied.
In the recent 3 months we observe lower wicks meaning buyers are moving into the US dollar again. Knowing that there is major support below the current price I have to think the dollar could start to bottom around this level.
Trading Conclusion:
The broad market is becoming unstable and looks like it could have more of a pullback this week. I would not be adding to any long positions until we see the market trading near support. Three out of four stocks move with the market so it is crucial to understand the overall market direction when buying and selling stocks and commodities.
Gold is trading at a level which is fuzzy. The weekly chart is neutral and the daily chart is still on fire as it moves up. All we can do is ride our positions and keep raising our stop prices.
The US dollar could start to bottom over the next few weeks. Depending what happens with Dubai this week we could be in for a big bounce in the dollar as investors flock to safety as the US dollar is still the currency of choice if/when other countries start to have a financial melt down again.

Italy Placed in Group of Deaths at Euro 2008 Seedings
The next football event which will shake the European grounds is just around the corner. The Euro 2008 will be held on 7 June, 2008 in various cities of the countries of Switzerland and Austria.
The four group seedings for the event has recently taken place and it seems it will have an unpredictable edge as the groups are set in the following way: Pot One: Switzerland, Austria, Greece and Netherlands. Pot Two: Croatia, Italy, Czech Republic and Sweden. Pot Three: Romania, Germany, Portugal and Spain and Pot Four: Poland, France, Turkey and Russia.
UEFA draw for the 16-team tournament will be held Dec. 2 in Lucerne, Switzerland.
Over the years, the Azzurri have had tough time moving forward in the team eliminations as they continue to be placed in the so called “Group of Deaths”. Back in 1978 Italy had to play the host and eventual winners Argentina, France and Hungary. At the World Cup USA 1994, Italians had one the closest-fight battles as their group became the strongest in football history; Ireland, Mexico, Norway along with Italy scored almost the same amount of points. The Italians qualified only by a goal difference.
For the Euro 1996, Germany, Czech Republic and Russia were part of the group selection the Italians had to play, they were knocked out due to a head-to-head match against the Czechs.
And more recently, the scenario for the Euro 2008 points to a group in which the Azzurri could play Spain, Holland and France or perhaps even a set of un fancied teams including Poland, Romania, Sweden and Austria.
Regarding the well-known “Oranje” this team was knocked out of the last World Cup in the second round, and they did have to work hard in order to qualify for Euro 2008 in a very weak group. Holland possibly has the worst defence after Austria but it is their back-line which helps with names like: Wilfred Bouma, Andre Ooijer and Mario Melchiot. Holland, will be allowed to play all their games in the one location and have an advantage due to their Pot One position.
The above mentioned seedings have been arranged according to a coefficient shown during the matches won and lost and goals scored throughout the qualifying for the 2006 World Cup and Euro 2008.

A Look at 6 Rare US Coins
While some US coins are rare there are those coins that are among the rarest of all collectible coins. Some may wonder how there can even be rare US coins considering the sheer volume produced over the years. The reason is some coins were not produced in high volume and many coins were recalled and destroyed. Such circumstances eventually created what is today the modern US coin collecting market. Of course, some coins are far scarcer than others with some rare US coins being on the very of extinction. What are some of the rarest of coins? Here is a look at 6 of them:
1849 Coronet Double Eagle. This $20 gold piece remains one the all-time rarest of rare US coins. There is only one left in the entire world. Needless to say, anyone that discovers the second known coin of this minting would also be gaining an acquisition worth millions.
1804 Silver Dollar. There are only 15 known coins remaining out of the many 1804 silver dollars produced. Are here more out there lost somewhere? If so, time will tell and whoever discovers it will certainly be a very lucky collector since the value of these coins is in the millions of dollars.
1913 Liberty Head Nickel. This coin has such a unique tale that it has become somewhat legendary in collector's circles. This coin was ordered discontinued in 1912 but 5 more were made by accident in 1913. One individual collector was able to acquire all 5 of these coins. This became a very treasured acquisition since the person that procured these 5 coins amassed a huge equity over the years. The immense rarity of these coins is what makes them an elusive prize that even those who could afford the millions they are worth still cannot purchase them a treasured prize. Adding to their value is the unique origin that spawned them.
1943 Copper Penny. It is not the copper that makes this particular penny a rarity; it is the inclusion of a bronze alloy. During WWII, bronze was rationed and these pennies were not supposed to include bronze. Of course, accidents do happen and some of these pennies were produced with a bronze alloy. This has allowed them to become a curious and prized collectible item in various collecting circles.
1933 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. Due to the enormous financial disaster that was known as The Great Depression, President Roosevelt was moved to take the US off the gold standard. That necessitated the recall of numerous gold coins so they could be melted down. This coin was one recalled and melted down. However, a small number of these coins remained in circulation. In 1992, one of these coins was sold in an auction for $7 million.
1970 Lincoln Penny Doubled Die Obverse. Not all pennies are worth one cent. This rare 1970 penny is worth $3,000. The minting process that created the "double die obverse" error also created a valuable penny that remains one of the most sought after collectible pennies in history.

How rare is it to find a 1943 solid copper penny?
is there a chance that I could have one in my pocket or a large jar of change?
You probably will not find one in your loose change. Current estimates by the U.S. Mint place the number of pennies in circulation at around 140 billion. Out of these, only about 40 will be a 1943 copper-alloy cent. You're better off buying a lottery ticket.
Because of its collector value, the 1943 copper cent has been counterfeited by coating steel cents with copper or by altering the dates of 1945, 1948, and 1949 pennies. The easiest way to determine if a 1943 cent is made of steel, and not copper, is to use a magnet. If it sticks to the magnet, it is not copper. If it does not stick, the coin might be of copper and should be authenticated by an expert.
