Germany Prussia

In January 1945, Hitler left his HQ in East Prussia and moved back to Berlin and into the Reich Chancellery. The Soviet Red Army was bearing down on Germany. A month later, he went underground into the Chancellery's air-raid shelter, a cavern of dimly-lit rooms made of solid, high-quality concrete.
During his last few months, Hitler's health deteriorated rapidly. In February 1945, after so many years of shouting and screaming, he had to have an operation on his vocal chords. Following the operation he had to stay silent for a whole week. Hitler refused to leave Berlin and when, realizing the war was truly lost, decided to end his life. Shuffling around with a stoop, Hitler looked much older than his fifty-six years. A new pain in his eye required daily doses of cocaine drops, and, perhaps from the onset of Parkinson's Disease, his left hand shook constantly. He'd fallen out with many of his senior colleagues - in particular Goring and Himmler. Goebbels, however, remained loyal to the last.
At the end of March a group of twenty Hitler Youth boys lined-up in the Chancellery garden for Hitler to inspect. Lined-up from the eldest to the youngest, Hitler, with his shaking left hand behind his back, shook hands with each child, pinching the cheek of the last, the youngest child. He delivered a short speech and thanked them for their bravery before shuffling back into the bunker. It was to be Hitler's last appearance in public.
On April 28, in a ten-minute ceremony, Hitler married his long-term partner, Eva Braun. Twenty-three years his junior, the German people knew nothing of her. Her presence, although not a secret amongst the Nazi hierarchy, was not something Hitler wished publicized lest it should diminish the adoration of Germany's women. That night Hitler dictated his will to his secretary, where he drew-up the make up of the government following his death. The admiral, Karl Donitz, was named as his successor, not as 'Fuhrer' but as president.
On April 29, with the Russians barely 300 metres away, Hitler made preparations for his death. Benzene was delivered into the bunker. Hitler insisted that his body be burnt. He did not want his corpse to finish up in Soviet hands, like an "exhibit in a cabinet of curiosities." He ordered also the testing of the newly-arrived batch of cyanide capsules. The chosen victim was Hitler's much loved Alsatian dog, Blondi. On April 30, Goebbels tried one last time to convince the Fuhrer to leave Berlin.
Near four o'clock, after a round of farewells, Hitler and his wife of two days retired to his study. Hitler wore upon his tunic, his Iron Cross (First Class) and his Wounded Badge of the First World War. A shot was heard. Hitler had shot himself through the right temple. Braun was also dead. She had swallowed the cyanide. The bodies, covered in blankets, were carried out into the Chancellery garden. There, with artillery exploding around them and neighboring buildings ablaze, Hitler's wishes were honored - 200 litres of benzene were poured on the corpses and set alight.
Hitler had come to power as German Chancellor, aged 43, in January 1933. The Third Reich was meant to last a thousand years. It had lasted twelve.

If (when) the UK adopts the euro, what symbols should be used on the coins?
Assuming that the queen's head would not be used (at least not on all coins), what should be pressed into the national side of the UK-issued euro coins? Famous landmarks? Famous people?
Austria, for example, uses the Secession building in Vienna on its 50 cent coin and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's portrait on its €1 coin. Germany uses the Brandenburg Gate on its 10, 20 and 50 cent coins and Italy uses the drawing by Leonardo da Vinci illustrating the ideal proportions of the human body on its €1 coin.
its a horrible thought just having the euro. i'd rather not think about what image would be pressed upon it.

East Germany

The Divided City of Germany
Berlin is the capital city the Federal Republic of Germany. Berlin hosted the 1936 Olympics and the host city for the 2006 FIFA World Cup Final.
The city was divided after the second War World and East Berlin became the capital of East Germany and West Berlin remained a West Germany enclave surrounded by the Berlin Wall from 1961 to 1989 then the city regained its status as the capital of all Germany.
Berlins typical dish is simple and yet satisfying it is plain fare best know as Boulette fried meatballs. Referring to drinks the Berliner Weilie beer with juice is considered well-known even beyond the citys boundaries
There are countless places in Berlin for shopping sprees flea markets and antique markets, cheap bargain stores and the whole spectrum in between.
The city offers clothing of all varieties, from up market to cheap. Luxury designers are based at the west end of Kurfrstendamm and in Friedrichstrasse.
One of the best is the Turkish market on Maybachufer. The big market halls, where you can buy everything from fruit and vegetable over meat and dairy products to clothing are typical for Berlin
The gay scene is one of the biggest and wildest in Europe.
The large television tower, adjacent to City Hall, stands as a beacon to the city. The tower is taller than the Eiffel Tower and offers views of the city below. The Berlin Television Tower has been marking the centre of Berlin since 1969. Every year up to 1.2 million visitors. The highlight of the World Cup Year in 2006 was when the spherical part of our tower was transformed into a magnet.
Berlins waterways offer the unique possibility of viewing at both the citys sights and the vicinity of Berlin from the waterside. The Havel the Spree, and another three rivers, as well as six canals flow through the town, creating over 13000 hectares lakes and 80km waterways. This makes the region Berlin Brandenburg a paradise for water sports enthusiasts.
Berlin has more than 170 museums and collections. They offer everything from the ancient to the ultra modern to the Egyptian Nefertiti, the Greek Pergamon Altar, the painters of the Brucke and the Bauhaus and works by Baselitz and Beuys.
The Pergamon is Berlins prime museum with 850,000 visitors a year. Hardly surprising, given its three outstanding collections under one roof, the Antiquity Collection, the Museum of the Near East and the Museum of Islamic Art.

What's the Name of that Movie about escaping from East Germany?
Back in the early 80s, I saw a movie about 2 families who lived in East Germany. The families worked together by making a large hot air balloon and escaped in the middle of the night.
Does anyone remember the name of that movie?
Night Crossing (1981)
starring John Hurt, Jane Alexander, Doug McKeon, Keith McKeon, Beau Bridges, Glynnis O'Connor
Yahoo!Movies synopsis:
This story of two East German families who launch an escape to the free world by using a hot-air balloon is based on an actual incident. Tired of the Cold War rules that restricted their lives, two families built their own balloon as an escape vehicle to the West. This uplifting tale inspires with its mix of human determination and heroism in the face of oppression.
IMDb review:
This movie accurately portrays the struggle life was for the typical East German. Watched by the secret police, friends and coworkers, most easterners simply existed. The Strelzyks and the Wetzels were two families who decided they weren't going to take it anymore. Despite the extreme danger involved in escaping to the West, they feel the rewards far outweighed the risks. John Hurt and Beau Bridges, portraying the respective family heads, hit upon the idea of flying over East Germany's heavily fortified border. There are tense moments as they gather and gerryrig the necessary materials for the flight. They work their day jobs and construct the balloon at night, right under the noses of the authorities, one of whom is Strelzyk's neighbor (Klaus Loewitsch). The first attempt, involving only the Strelzyks, ends in failure when the balloon crashes just a few yards from the border. The crashed balloon is discovered by border guards, and a relentless search begins for the conspirators who are determined to try again. With sales of materials being closely monitored, Peter and Guenter still manage to procure bits and pieces of cloth with which to construct a second balloon for their nail-biting escape to freedom.
I remember seeing this film several times, and it had such an impact because I recall the appearance of the Wall and remember watching in astonishment as it was torn down decades later. Back then, it was a symbol of the Iron Curtain.

Would Iran Be German, And Ahmadinejad, Be Hitler?
Hasan A. Yahya, A professor of philosophy
The Holocaust few remaining survivors may recall how Hitler built up his anti-Semitic policies to persecute Jews as well as other ethnic groups during the period of WWII. One of these practices was unifying Gemany, incite hatred of non-Aryan race, youth organization support the government through police forces and the Islamic Revolutionary Guards.
Pacificviews.org's article titled: "Hitler, Munich, Ahmadinejad, Iran", gives a comparative analysis between Ahmadinejad (Iranian president) and Hitler . In fact, Ahmadinejad's resemblance to Hitler is a scary thing and reasonably imagined. But such imagination is more a function of his role in the decay of the Iranian revolution power, which is starting to take on some definite Weimer overtones. Signs are seen in the shape of frog jumping in the fire-house. For example, Ahmadinejad's Holocaust denials, his public fantasies about Israel being wiped off the map which may lead any observer to think "sensibly" dismissed Hitler's Mein Kampf ravings as merely a carny act to bring in the rubes. But I also know that fire-breathing rhetoric about destroying the "Zionist entity" has been a staple of Middle Eastern political hate speech since the 1950s of last century. Such threats have to be taken seriously, and everybody should be aware of that. But to automatically assume that those who say such things are actually planning to commit genocide. No one, especially Israel, may dismiss those remarks even though publicized by liberals, or anti-communism and political right.
Assuming that the man is very similar to Hitler, is little far from Ahmadinejad as a pios Muslim person. But as a Shi'ah believer, the assumption should have some weight in world politics. While no one can guess Ahmadinejad's intentions, his practices recently undertaken by him or his government supporters lead to that assumption that he might become Hitler-like person, especially when it comes to Jews, denial of the Holocaust, and threatening to map out Israel from the world community. But to be unbiased in this case we ha have to look to what Adolf Hitler did and what Ahmadinejad is doing, and let the reader judge for him/herself.
What Hitler Did? In Germany, the National Socialist German Workers' Party (abbreviated NSDAP), known as the Nazi Party, was a political party in between 1919 and 1945. It was known as the German Workers' Party (DAP) before the name was changed in 1920. The party's last leader, Adolf Hitler, was appointed Chancellor of Germany by president Paul von Hindenburg. in 1933. Hitler rapidly established a totalitarian regime known as the Third Reich. Nazi Ideology, stressed the failures of communism, liberalism, and democracy. It also stressed the "racial purity of the German people", as well as Northwestern Europeans and persecuted those it perceived either as race enemies that is "life unworthy of living". This included Jews, Slavs, Roma, and Arabs, and so-called "Mischlings " along with Communist, homosexuals, , the mentally and physical disabled, and many others. This persecution came to its climax when the party and the German state which it controlled organized the systematic murder of millions of non Aryan race especially the Jews, in what has become known as the Holocaust. Hitler's desire to build a German empire through expansionist policies led to the outbreak of World War II.
What Iran Ahmadi Nejad did: In Iran, the revolutionary ideology stresses the failure of liberals and democracy. It is also stresses the racial purity of Persians and Shi'ah in other Arab and non-Arab countries and persecuted those who oppose the government or the ruling party. Nejad desire to build an Iranian empire through expansionist policies which may lead to the outbreak of wars in the future. The party grew out of smaller political groups with a nationalist orientation through the spirit of Khomeini.
The airways and skies of Iran were announced forbidden as air flight zones, if the Airlines belong to countries do not recognize the Persian Gulf, replacing the word "Arabian", This claim from one nation (Iran), it hurts six Arab nations surround the Gulf as well as tens of countries support the Arabian name Gulf. Furthermore, the gulf has two sides, three quarter of its area belong to Arabs according to International laws. Other point, the Islands occupied by Iran which belong to the United Arab Emirates and denial of Iran of their right. Another expansionist threats, calling the Kingdom of Bahrain as belong to Persia (or Iran). The internal situation in terms of free thinking, especially after last summer's presidential election, which was accused to be stolen by the government, also show some concerns, the Iranian authorities recently closed two major opposition publications, among the last to remain in circulation as the government has suppressed its opponents' communications in recent months. Earlier, the authorities had blocked most opposition Web sites inside Iran and slowed the Internet to a crawl to prevent protesters from organizing demonstrations (New York Times, March 2)
Deterioration of labor force situation of unpaid employees brought Human Rights Activists attention, While Ahmadinejad government Support only those who support the status quo and government and party, Human Rights News Agency reported that 80 employees of Metec, a steel and industrial equipment manufacturer, gathered in front of the company offices in Isfahan demanding to know why they had not received a paycheck in seven months. Also, the head of Iran's air force, Hassan Shah-safi, announced the production of a number of 2,000-pound guided bombs, the semiofficial news agency Fars reported. The bombs, called Qassed, or herald, were first tested in a military exercise in 2006. Another 20,000 people were arrested on Feb. 11, the 31st anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, when the government thwarted opposition plans to stage a large antigovernment rally. Arresting opposition people by hundreds is another situation. Mr. Shah-safi said that Iran would soon test a new generation, called Qassed-2, that would be "more precise and enjoy a better destructive capability (The New York Times, March 2)
What Ahmadinejad's and Iran's power are not, however, compared to Israel, He remains the absolute dictator of an in-advanced industrial state with a first-rate military. To pretend that he currently poses the same kind of threat to the world (or even to the Jewish people) that Hitler did in 1938 is ridiculous. It also "discredits the very legitimate concerns that the world should have about Iran and the future of the Iranian revolution."
We may reach the conclusion made by pacificviews.org. writer, that "Ahmadinejad's combination of demagogic appeal, ideological zealotry and end-times eschatology does make him a much more plausible stand-in for Hitler than an apparachik like Milosevic or a thug like Saddam." But time is running, and the world which brought Hitler, may still have the appetite to bring another. While symptoms of Nazism are in the making, one should be aware of the world change in terms of ethnic and religious ideologies, No body knows!(1139 words) www.hasanyahya.com

Ein Große Bestimmungsörter (a Great Destination): Getting Discount Airfare to Germany
Of all of the beautiful and exotic places to vacation, more and more people are clamoring for Europe. There is so much history and beauty; it is no wonder many airlines and travel companies have been offering discount airfares to Germany, France, Spain, and other European countries.
Germany is one of the oldest countries in the world, dating back before the formation of the Holy Roman Empire when the Germanic tribes ruled the lands. Majestic castles an stately manor houses remind tourists of a time when knights and chivalry were not just words. The artwork, whether painted or sewn in the form of tapestries has captured that age so pristinely. Today vacationers can visit museums and tour some of the more elegant estates. Finding discount airfares to Germany means more in the budget for hotels and other extra perks.
Break Out The Polka And Smelly Cheese
Before you decide to purchase your discount airfare to Germany through an online travel web site like Orbitz or Expedia, consider checking out the airline's web page that you intended to fly. Continental and U.S. Airways offer weekly, and even monthly specials on airfare across the country and the globe. You would be surprised how low their specials can go; offering passage to such places as the Caribbean, The Orient, and Europe for only a few dollars. Discount airfare to Germany may be easier to find than your car keys on any given day. And you will have much better stories to tell all of your friends, not including all of the pictures.
There are plenty of travel web sites in the sea, so to speak. And the majority of them are advertising vacation packages for almost pennies. Is this a good thing? Can you trust what you read, or should it have an oiled up "used car salesman" vibe to it? It can be quite a responsibility to plan an exciting, full of memories vacation for you and your family. And there is much more to remember to take care of than just finding discount airfare to Germany. Finding what you need quickly and easily makes each step of the planning process that much less stressful. Find out if the web site you are thinking of purchasing through has a customer service center, with both an email address and phone number. Sometimes it helps to be able to talk to a live person versus an electronic letter.

Compare the role of nationalism in Germany and in the Austrian Empire?...?
Compare the role of nationalism in Germany and in the Austrian Empire. How can nationalism be both a unifying and divisive force? Explain
pleasee help i need help writting this essay
Well first you need to remember the definition of nationalism: Having pride for one's country.
Knowing this, you can relate it to the countries. Both had a great pride in what their country was, and you should just find examples of how they showed their pride.
With these great forces, wouldn't it be a good idea to combine themselves and become one great big force? This way they are more powerful and therefore can conquer more.
Hope this gets your mind goin a little bit :]
