Fasting blood sugar or FBS is a test for the levels of glucose in blood. Glucose is the major monosaccharide in blood. Its measurement is vital to the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus. Fasting, because the patient has to fast for 8-12 hours before testing. Fasting is crucial to come up with reliable laboratory results and consequently - diagnosis.

How is Fasting Blood Sugar performed?

1. When the test is ordered, the patient should contact the health worker responsible in the collection of the specimen.

2. Proper instructions are given. Instructions may vary, if there are other tests simultaneously done with FBS. Examples are: If it is done with triglyceride test, fasting would be 12-14 hours. If electrolyte is performed, water may not be permitted.

3. Fasting usually starts after the evening meal. 7 pm to 7 am. Nothing is eaten; not even candy, coffee, tea or any beverage.

4. Before 7 am, the patient should already be in the laboratory.

5. Blood then is extracted and properly labeled and encoded.

6. The patient can eat after the blood extraction.

7. The fasting hours should not be shortened or prolonged.

Other tests that can be performed with glucose in the diagnosis of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) are:

1. 2 -hour post prandial test (2-HPPT)

This is the most sensitive parameter in diagnosing diabetes mellitus. It is because two hours after a meal (post prandially), glucose levels in normal persons will go back to normal.

Normal blood glucose levels in adult:

Orthotoulidine method = 60-110 mg/dL

Nelson-Somogyi method = 80-120 mg/dL

2. Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT)

The patient ingests a glucose load/challenge or solution. Then timed specimens are collected at 30 minutes or one-hour intervals. The results are compared to standard results for normal patients.

3. Intravenous Glucose Tolerance Test (IGTT)

This is the same as OGTT. The difference is that the glucose load is injected intravenously. Persons who have gastrointestinal problems employ IGTT. Obtained results are interpreted just like OGTT.

4. HbA1C test (Hemoglobin A1C).

This test is a measure of the patient's compliance to his drug treatment. If the patient is dutifully taking in his medicine, the obtained result would be normal. If the patient is not complying with his medications, then the result is elevated.

It is good that people become aware of these different tests, so that they would be able to monitor their glucose levels or that of diabetic relatives and friends.

Not sure what this question is getting at, but suppose we're prospecting for lead. Then knowing the percentage of the mineral galena (which is an ore of lead) in a rock sample would tell us how good an ore one had in hand. At a more sophisticated level, knowing the mineralogic makeup of a rock tells one something about the origin and subsequent geochemical history of a rock. If one is looking for ore deposits, this sort of information is essential.

Obsidian, rhyolite, and (most) pumice are all extrusive siliceous igneous rocks (i.e., they are high in silica). If the magma from which they formed had not been extruded (i.e., it formed an intrusive rock) that magma would have formed a granitic rock.

Gabbro is a mafic intrusive rock. If the same magma had been erupted at the surface and formed an extrusive rock, that rock would have been a basalt.

Bass Color Vision – Use it to Your Advantage

It is known that bass are able to see colors and it is felt that they have better vision for the colors of red and green than humans. Vision is the most vital sense that bass have. Their excellent visual acuity is better than that of humans. This is advantageous for the bass both during the daylight hours and near dusk as the level of light diminishes. 

The clarity of the water has a very large effect upon how color impacts bass fishing. In clear shallow water, artificial bait which mimics the silver and gold color of the bass’s natural baitfish food sources work well. The flash of these colors as artificial bait passes through the water is very effective in attracting bass. If your bait is designed to resemble crawfish it should display colors that are similar to the natural coloration of the crawfish. The best colors in this situation would be shades of green and brown. 

As visibility is reduced (1-3 feet) brighter colors such as chartreuse, and the shades of red and orange that display “neon” qualities become more effective. With further reductions of visibility(less than 1foot such as in muddy water) then the best colors to use are dark colors such as dark reds, browns; blues, grays and black. 

You should also consider the amount of sunlight present when selecting the color for you chosen bait. On bright sunny days colors should be chosen as outlined above in the discussion of visibility. As the intensity of sunlight is reduced as occurs on cloudy days you should shift to the bait colors recommended for reduced visibility. 

Will baits of solid colors or those including flakes of additional color attract more fish? Again the visibility factor will be the determining factor. In bright sunny conditions in clear water flakes of silver and gold will increase the “flashy “appearance that may grab a fish’s attention. As the visibility is reduced either by reduced sunlight or increased water murkiness, this effectiveness of the silver and gold flakes will be reduced and lures with small area or flakes of darker colors will begin to work better. 

While there is no hard and fast rule for color effectiveness, you will be able to improve you bass fishing skills by using the principles outlined in this article to adapt to the conditions you face as you head out onto the water in search of “the big one”.

The weathervane is most often thought of as a metal rooster on the top of a barn that points in the direction of the blowing wind. That is a weathervane point in the direction of the origin of the wind. A compass rose is fixed below the rooster and points in the direction of the eight cardinal points of the earth.
