From Italy
From Italy

Say "Olive Oil" to most Americans and they think "Italy." Good for the Italian olive oil producers, but is olive oil from Italy really the very best? What the Italians don't want you to know is that Italy consumes a great deal more olive oil than it produces. So where does olive oil from Italy come from?
Big Italian olive oil companies buy their oil from Greece, Spain, and the Middle East. The oil is shipped to Italy, where it is blended, bottled, and exported to America, where people looking for olive oil from Italy will buy it without suspecting its true origins. On this very long supply chain, the oil gets older and loses its unique qualities as it is blended. The fats involved are still the healthy fats, but even if it grades as "Extra Virgin Olive Oil" it's quality is questionable.
Which brings us to a good question: What is Extra Virgin Olive Oil? In the old days, it was the oil from the first pressing of the olives, which had the lowest acid content. Times have changed.
Today most olive oil is produced in a different way - no more crushing olives with stones, pressing it with weights, and heating it up to get out the lower quality oil. In a modern olive press, the olives are crushed in a steel machine and the oil is extracted by centrifuge. The temperature is kept low to protect the oil quality. There are no subsequent pressings - all of the edible oil is extracted at the same time. The secret: if the olives were harvested at the right time and handled correctly, every drop of this oil is extra virgin.
Does all this mean that you can't get a good olive oil from Italy? No, absolutely not. But you can't get a good olive oil from Italy from mass producers - the ones your grocery store stocks. That oil serves its purpose - and it won't hurt you. But to get a top olive oil from Italy, you have to look to the smaller, artisan, estate producers. These producers grow their own olives and are very careful about handling their product.
Poor handling and storage of olive oil is the best way to ruin a good product. Let it get warm, expose it to light and oxygen, let it get old and you turn a magnificent natural product into 'just an oil.' It loses most of the qualities that make olive oil not just good for you, but enjoyable. The major producers don't take the same care as the artisans. Neither does your local grocery store.
So the next time you are looking for a top olive oil from Italy, look to the smaller producers. With the internet, what used to be reserved for visitors to Italy is within the reach of Joe in Wisconsin. These small producers are out there, and their fresh olive oils are some of the best olive oils available anywhere.
Want to know which oils are worth the money and which to skip? Sydney discovered good olive oil when she moved to Crete, Greece. When she left Crete, she began a quest to discover great quality olive oil available in America. She writes about the best olive oils she's found at Olive Oil Review.
More or less, how much would it cost to ship a 200lb 50cc motorbike from italy to seattle?
I'm moving to the states from italy and i would like to be able to take my scooter w me... any other shipping suggestions r welcome too. thanx!
more than it would cost to buy a new one in the states

Falkland Islands
Falkland Islands

For most Antarctic travellers Ushuaia is the beginning and end of their southern adventure. 1500 miles south of Buenos Aires, Ushuaia, a town of 50,000, has prospered by being the Argentinean port for many of the Antarctic cruise ships. The town is worth exploring on its own. Walking around Ushauaia will compensate for the sea voyage two days out and two days back from the the Antarctic.
From the cruise ship pier and the coastal street called Maipu, the mountains of Chile can be seen across the Beagle Channel. Above Ushuaia loom the ends of the Tierra del Fuego mountains. Along the shore you can observe many sea birds such as terns and gulls, and giant petrels gliding like minature albatrosses. Nearby is the Argentinean 1982 Isla Malvinas War Memorial, (the Falkland Islands' War) in the shape of a steel map. Antarctic souveniers can be found on the pier, at the nearby artisans' market, and one block up, along San Martin, Ushuaia's main street. On San Martin the tourist centre is a good starting point to explore the town.
San Martin has a wide range of restuarants, from those specializing in meat (parrrillas) and king crab, to pizzas, and to local cafes like Bananas. The public post office on San Martin is in a distinctive "Swiss chalet" building, and it always has a crowd around its doors. (The Argentinean private postal system is less accessible). Along San Martin are Internet cafes (locutorios) where, with a long distance number you can phone home direct. ATMs at the banks in the same area can sometimes be tricky; it is best to carry US dollars, and then change them into pesos at a bank.
Some Ushuaia streets perpendicular to the coast can be steep; some are even staircases. On the streets behind San Martin can be found a few examples of the old wooden vertical-boarded Tierra del Fuego houses. At 25 de Mayo half a block up from the pier is Boutique del Libro, with an extensive collection of books on the Antarctic and Patagonia.
At the east end of downtown is the Maritime Museum and Prison displaying wooden model ships, Antarctic exhibits, and a cold and grim prison, fortunately no longer used. The earlier prisoners built many of the building in Ushuaia including the cathedral and the prison.
West of Ushuaia next to the Chilean border is the Tierrra del Fuego National Park. Minibuses from the pier and Maipu travel the twelve kilometres to the park's entrance. English and Spanish brochures are available for short or long walks amidst beautiful coastal scenery, many birds, and guindo trees (evergreen beeches). Under the trees with the perennial canopy it is dark and often bare of vegetation. The park centre has food, liquor, cakes, a fireplace, souvenirs, and even a TV. (Mick Jagger was performing on the screen when I was there.).
Finally, a reminder that Ushuaia is nearly always windswept from the west, rain or shine, summer or winter. "The Lonely Planet" guide South America is recommended for Usuahia. For your Antartic trip Jeff Rubin's Antarctica (The Lonely Planet) is a very comprehensive guide.
Michael Warr worked as a meteorologist and dog handler in the Antarctic in the 1960s. He returned as an Antarctic tourist in on an icebreaker in 2005, and was an Antarctic historian on a cruise ship in 2006. He taught in British Columbia and is now retired. His activities are running, reading and gardening.
How and when the British got the Falkland Islands?
And I am talking before the Falklands war.
In 1594, they were visited by English commander Richard Hawkins, who, combining his own name with that of Queen Elizabeth I, the "Virgin Queen," gave the islands the name of "Hawkins' Maidenland."
In 1600, Sebald de Weert, a Dutchman, visited them and called them the Sebald Islands (in Spanish, "Islas Sebaldinas" or "Sebaldes"), a name which they bore on some Dutch maps into the 19th century.
English Captain John Strong sailed between the two principal islands in 1690 and called the passage "Falkland Channel" (now Falkland Sound), after Anthony Cary, 5th Viscount Falkland (1659-1694), who as Commissioner of the Admiralty had financed the expedition and later became First Lord of the Admiralty. From this body of water the island group later took its collective name.

Why does all the olive oil in the U.S. come from Italy and not Spain?
I'm living in Spain now and enjoying this delicious "oro liquido" on a near-daily basis. It's strange to me that most of the olive oil in the U.S. is imported from Italy and not Spain. Spain is the world's top producer of olive oil, correct? Or one of the top producers, next to Italy and Turkey? I heard a rumor that the Italian mafia has something to do with it and am wondering if there is any truth to this..
Vizu-Bcn: I can assure that most Americans know that Spain is not in South America!! Is that what you meant?
I've read some studies that found the truth behind olive oil imported to the U.S. Sadly, it's not pure olive oil, but a mixture of oils from various plants and regions. This makes me angry. I never want to leave Spain!
the oil sold as "Italian" is actually Spanish

Italy Venice
Italy Venice

Venice, the beautiful "bride of the sea" is a city of northeast Italy. Venice, also known as the "Queen of the Adriatic" is built on 118 islets within a lagoon in the Gulf of Venice, an arm of the Adriatic Sea. Venice is locally dubbed as 'The Most Serene One' for its tranquil and placid beauty.
Venice, the 'city of canals', is the capital of the region of Veneto and of the province of Venice. Venice has a great network of canals instead of streets. The Grand Canal serves as its main canal. The people use gondolas and other boats to move about the city. Shakespeare beautifully pictured the comely city of gondolas in 'the merchant of Venice' and 'Othello'.
Venice was sinking an average of 1/5th of an inch yearly until the middle 1970s, when the government restricted use of water from the city's underground wells. Venice is one of Italy's major ports besides commercial & industrial center.
Venice is one of the most coveted tourist spots in the world. Saint Mark's Square, on which sits the Basilica of Saint Mark, the Bell Tower, Piazza San Marco, Campo San Polo, the Palace of the Doges (the former rulers of the city), Palazzo Grassi, Ca' d'Oro,
Ca' Rezzonico, Peggy Guggenheim Collection museum, Palazzo Labia and the Academy of Fine Arts are the main attractions of the city. The city also houses the famous paintings of such Venetian masters as Titian, Tintoretto, and Paolo Veronese. Venice is famous for its nightlife, museums and hotels.

What is the cheapest or quickest way to get from Venice (Italy) to Avignon(France)?
I am doing a walking tour in Italy and have to check out of Venice hotel 10am on 20 June 2009, then be in Avignon by 3pm on 21 June. I would like a rough price for plane/train etc so I can work out my budget.
This isn't so easy to answer this far in advance - there will be two adjustments to train schedules/prices between now and late June and airfares are also difficult to predict this far in advance.
There are no current direct flights between Venice and Avignon. Budget airlines flying into Avignon are all from the UK.
Right now, there are several options for trains that will take you between Venice and Avignon in the time frame you're looking for. One of the best sites for planning train trips throughout Europe is: http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en, but you'll need to use the individual country websites to price the trip. You can also use the Italian train website to see options: http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=ad1ce14114bc9110VgnVCM10000080a3e90aRCRD and/or the French train website: http://www.sncf.com/en_EN/flash/
The current option that I would recommend is the night train from Venice (10:07 pm) to Dijon (6:09 am) with a connection from Dijon (6:35 am) to Lyon Part Dieu (8:35 am) and from there (9:25 am) to Avignon (11:44 am). The advantage of this is that you can get a berth on the train and sleep through the night without having to pay for a hotel.
The current cost from Venice to Dijon depends on availability of various discounts. The Flexi fares are 120 euro for a berth in a cuchette with 4 berths or 115 euro in a cuchette with 6 berths. There's also a fare at 15 euro less for each type. However, there are also three discount fares for the same accomodations. The GO fare is 70 euro for a place in a 4 berth cuchette or 65 euro for a place in a 6 berth cuchette. There are also two levels of Smart Fare for a place in a 6 berth cuchette - 50 euro or 35 euro. You'll need to purchase your ticket in advance to get one of the deeper discounts since they tend to sell out fast. Generally these go on sale 60 days before the day of the trip. I've taken this night train several times going to Paris and have found it convenient. You can leave your bags at the baggage deposit at Venice Santa Lucia train station and spend the rest of the day or most hotels will store your bags after you check out if your travel time is later in the day.
You can price the part of the trip within France on the French train website above. There are many connections that will get you from Dijon to Avignon in time. Depending on the speicfic trains, this part of the trip should be 35 to 50 euro or less.
